Third WordPress Workshop – Novi Sad

On November 2nd, I held another workshop in Novi Sad. This is part three of the entire WordPress Workshops series in Novi Sad.

Migrating a WordPress site

During the workshop, we went through creating a WordPress website manually by using MAMP or WAMP and then migrating the entire site to a hosting provider.

After the workshop, I recorded a video of the entire process which you can find below:

I’m speaking in Serbian but the whole interface is in English

For the next workshop, we’ll dive into HTML and CSS.

Second WordPress Workshop – Novi Sad

During the 2nd WordPress Workshop in Novi Sad (here’s the link to the first one #), the attendees worked on completing the remaining tasks I prepared for mastering WordPress.com site creation. The videos of the solutions can be found here.

Installing WordPress on a Local Machine

We also dipped our toes into installing the WordPress.org software locally by using Local by Flywheel.

I recorded a short video of the entire process:

I’m speaking in Serbian but the whole interface is in English

For the next workshop, we’ll dive deeper into installing WordPress locally and we’ll also install WordPress on a host via cPanel – I’m still checking which hosting provider we should use 😀

First WordPress Workshop – Novi Sad

On Saturday, we had our first WordPress workshop in the Startit Center of Novi Sad. The workshops were conducted in 3 groups of ~30 people and each group had a dedicated time slot of 2 hours. We managed to cover several topics:

The Beginning of WordPress

I shared the story of WordPress beginnings, B2/cafelog, and the post that started it all. I spoke about Matt Mullenweg, Mike Little, GPL, and how a few dedicated people devoted to the same cause can make great things happen.

WordPress.com and WordPress.org

The logos of Automattic, WordPress.com, and WordPress.org

We also covered the differences between Automattic’s WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

Creating a WordPress.com site

I guided the attendees through the process of creating a WordPress.com account and afterward, I demonstrated how to create a site from scratch by using different WordPress editors, Gutenberg blocks, and Customizer options. Afterward, the attendees worked on a few exercises I previously created and they launched their shiny new sites.

Additional Material

After the workshops, several people approached me and they mentioned it would be super cool to have a video of the whole process I used when I created a WordPress.com site from scratch.

So, here’s the video 🙂

Special Shoutout

I’d also like to highlight one of the workshop attendees, Relja, who published the details of both the initial talk and the first workshop on his website!

Intro to WordPress Workshops in Novi Sad

The WordPress Workshops in Novi Sad kicked off on Saturday, September 28th. I was overwhelmed by the number of people that showed up 🙂 I expected 15-25 people total but 170 signed up and around 120 showed up at the intro talk this Saturday.

During the intro talk, I shared my WordPress story with the attendees and I gave a short overview of all the areas which will be covered during the workshops. Afterwards, we worked on creating Slack accounts on the official WordPress Serbia Slack which we’ll use for further communication. There will be three groups created and the workshops will be conducted in two-hour timeslots for each group. The workshops as a whole will last for seven Saturdays during the course of three months.

I’ll be uploading the workshops material after each class on both my website (in English) and on Startit.rs (in Serbian).
